When a pine tree falls or a branch dies, the tree&#8217;s resin slowly migrates into the base of the branches and the heartwood of the stump. Over time, this resin hardens and concentrates, creating wood that is almost waterproof, burns intensely, and lights even in wet conditions. The magic happens where the branches meet the trunk. Saw or split a branch off right at the base, close to the main stem, and look at the cross-section. Fat-wood is easy to recognise: it&#8217;s darker than the surrounding wood, often yellowish or amber-coloured, and it feels dense and slightly waxy to the touch. And that smell? You&#8217;ll know it immediately.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>How to use it<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Fat-wood splits and shaves easily with a knife. A couple of thin shavings or a small feather stick of fatwood will catch a spark from your ferro rod almost instantly\u2014even in rain or wind. You need very little to get a fire going. It\u2019s one of those things that, once you\u2019ve tried it, you\u2019ll never want to be without again.<\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"><strong>Remember to leave some for the next person<\/strong><\/p><p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">When you find a good spot, take a little\u2014but leave some for the next person who comes by. The forest is generous.
